Introduction to the Tool/Technique
Analytical procedures are a powerful internal audit technique used to evaluate financial or operational data by studying plausible relationships between data sets. Auditors use these procedures to detect anomalies, outliers, or unexpected trends that could indicate errors or misstatements. These procedures are especially useful in the evaluation and conclusion phase of the audit, allowing the auditor to focus on high-risk areas without needing to test every transaction.

Analytical procedures may include:

Trend analysis over time (e.g., revenue by month)

Ratio analysis (e.g., profit margin)

Comparison against budgets, forecasts, or industry benchmarks

Identifying sudden or unexplained variances

2. Real-Life Application: ACME Corp Audit by Auren
Internal Auditor Auren used the Analytical Procedures Matrix to assess the monthly profit trend at ACME. CEO Liora was concerned about unpredictable fluctuations in profitability, while Project Manager Aven was responsible for overseeing marketing expenses, which had recently increased.

Findings from the matrix:

In April 2025, although revenue only dipped by $1,000, expenses increased by $4,000, leading to a $5,000 drop in net profit. Auren flagged this anomaly and found it was due to a one-time marketing campaign that Aven hadn’t logged in the expense forecast.

In June 2025, revenue unexpectedly dropped by $5,500, which was not aligned with seasonal trends. Auren flagged the record and noted it might be due to delays in client invoicing or decreased project acquisition. He recommended immediate follow-up with the sales team.

Auren presented these insights to Liora and Aven in a short dashboard format, prompting both corrective and preventive actions:

Aven agreed to better document planned marketing spends.

Liora instructed the finance team to reconcile billing timelines and ensure sales targets are met in Q3.

These findings helped focus the audit’s conclusion section on areas where controls or communication broke down—not just where the numbers didn’t match.

__________

Upon reading the Disclaimer, a reader may click the link below to download an example of a relevant tool.

T&Ts Series E, Internal Audit, Evaluation & Conclusion Techniques, Episode 05— Analytical Procedures

1.
